To mammogram or not to mammogram...that is the question

In 2009 the U. S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released new guidance regarding the recommended frequency of mammograms. USPSTF are experts funded, staffed, and appointed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. They examine and review evidence and make recommendations regarding preventive services.

Among the changes made was a recommendation for no mammograms for women less than 50 years of age, as they can cause harm such as false positives, unnecessary and sometimes painful imaging tests and biopsies, and anxiety. USPSTF does recommend mammograms every two years for women 50 to 74 years of age. The task force does not recommend self breast exams (SBE), although clinical breast exams (CBE) may be beneficial.

Although the USPSTF has changed their guidance, the American Cancer Society and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists still recommend yearly mammograms starting at age 40. They also recommend CBE every 3 years for women in their 20's and 30's and SBE starting at age 20.

Keep in mind that women with a significant family history of breast cancer are most likely to benefit from earlier mammograms, teaching BSE, and performing annual CBE.
With all the differing opinions of respected scientists and institutions, it can be difficult to decide what guidance to follow regarding breast examinations and mammograms.

The bottom line is every woman is different in terms of where she fits into this picture, or her understanding of the statistics, or what she feels comfortable with. If you choose to continue doing SBE's make sure you know how to do them right. Knowing what is normal there and what is not is probably a pretty good idea. And, finally talk to your doctor, ask questions, and voice your concerns.

Keep in mind, Eielson will continue their current mammogram frequency criteria:
Age 40 to 49 every 1 to 2 years, and over 50 yrs old every year.

Bottom line, Eielson practices mammogram Self Referral. If you are interested in a mammogram or would like to discuss options, please call Maj Karen Kirk at 377-6529.
