During disasters and emergencies the need for medical care can quickly overwhelm the system. That’s why the US Department of Health and Human Services has Disaster Medical Assistance Teams or (DMATs). They may be deployed at a moments notice to get people the medical care they need when it counts. Minnesota’s DMAT Team One is in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria where they’re teamed up with the Army Reserve Medical Command. Larry Himebaugh is working as an administrator for the Minnesota team and he talks about their role in providing care.
Whether they are responding to a hurricane, flood or other natural disaster; protecting health and saving lives is their mission. DMAT members provide care that matters, and working with the military is a natural fit. Mr Himebaugh explains how they work well together.
