EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- January is National Blood Donation Month and Eielson Airmen are taking a step to help save lives with a two-day blood drive hosted by the 354th Medical Group.
“Donating blood is something which takes minimal effort but will save the lives of many,” said 1st Lt. Christina Blitch, a 354th MDG practice manager. “Some people aren’t always able to volunteer their hours in the community, so this is a great way to make a lasting impact.”
There are eligibility requirements and several factors that can impact a person’s ability to donate. International travel, certain medications and some FDA guidelines are just a few things which can be a disqualifying factor to donate. For a complete list, visit the Blood Bank of Alaska website.
“One in seven people who enter a hospital will need blood,” said Blitch. “One pint of donated blood can save three lives, and more than 15 million pints of blood are transfused in the U.S. each year.”
A frequent problem that arises when a person wants to donate blood is fear of the needle. Blitch explained it is a common fear that many experience.
“Share your fear with your technician, because they are professionals who try and make you feel as comfortable as possible,” Blitch explained. “Also, try to distract yourself by thinking of something else; breathe deep, slow and relax! Just remember donating blood helps save lives.”
The donation process is done quickly and efficiently by four simple steps, which take 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
Step 1: Registration
Step 2: Medical history and mini-physical
Step 3: Donation
Step 4: Refreshments
“The mini-physical includes checking the temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin of the donor to ensure it is safe for them to give blood,” said Blitch.
Anyone 18 or older who wants to donate needs to bring a photo ID with them. Anyone under 18 will need to have their parent present to authorize the donation.
If you are a member of the Icemen team and would like to participate in donating blood, a blood drive will be held in the fellowship hall of the Base Chapel on Jan. 24 and 25 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Remember, eat well the day before you donate, stay hydrated and bring your photo ID.
