Approximately fifty years after the inception of National Peace Officers Memorial Day, the citizens of this grateful nation continue to honor law enforcement officers on May 15.

National Peace Officers Memorial Day marks the beginning of a National Police Week - a week dedicated to remembering the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving as the nation's law enforcement officers.

"I think it's appropriate, but it may [have a different affect] depending on what it means to [others]," said Staff Sgt. David Bloom, the 354th Security Forces Squadron military working dog section handler. "Although, an entire week to recognize them ensures their memory is not forgotten."

"I think [National Police Week] should definitely continue; we need it to remind us [of their sacrifice]," added Sergeant Bloom.

The 354th SFS created and coordinated several different events as a reminder of the importance of peace officers. Events included the Open Pistol Shoot, the Warrior Challenge, the 5K Walk or Run, and Police Appreciation Day.

Each event was designed to highlight the different skills essential to a cop's survival. For example, the open pistol shoot provided participants an opportunity to show off professional marksmanship.

"It was a great way to bring everyone together and start the National Police Week with a bang," said Staff Sgt. Daryl Ables, the 354th SFS training instructor.

Tech. Sgt. James Booker, 354th SFS quality control evaluator, finished the Open Pistol Shoot in less than 28 seconds to make him the overall winner. He fired a total of 20 rounds completing three different stages of targets including a combination of pop-up targets, paper targets and metal targets.

The week started with the lowering of the flag to half-staff in recognition of National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Events scheduled during the week further acknowledged the memory of those who gave everything to serve and protect.
