The 354th Fighter Wing Equal Opportunity office started their first week-long seminar March 21 to review the tools and techniques for Staff and Technical Sergeants to become more effective leaders.

Classes, which were held at the Aurora Club, were offered to satisfy Eielson's training requirements and also mentor supervisors.

More than 700 sergeants attended this program that focused on preventative education of sexual harassment and unlawful discrimination. EO took a proactive stance by raising awareness about sexual harassment; which is the most reported complaint in the military according to EO figures.

The seminar covered topics of sexual harassment and other types of discrimination. EO representatives analyzed ways to approach the different situations with the NCOs and taught them techniques that would enable them to properly resolve issues.

"We have a very intelligent, energized enlisted force at our base; in addition, we are providing (supervisors) with the resources to help them address issues of unlawful discrimination and sexual harassment. They're doing a fine job. We're just giving them the tools to continue to grow as leaders," said Master Sgt. Michael McCoy, EO superintendent.

"Think about what you see at your level in the workplace," said Chief Master Sgt. Jerry Moore, 354 FW Command Chief. "Be leaders and supervisors, but mostly leaders, and live by the Airmen's Creed."

During the seminars, NCOs were able to give feedback on their perception of how to handle different sexual harassment and discrimination situations.

NCOs play a critical role in alleged discrimination or sexual harassment incidents by giving Airmen proper guidance and leadership. In an environment where junior Airmen are challenged daily, it is essential that they know NCOs will intercede, uphold standards, and do what is right.
