The 354th Civil Engineering Squadron has initiated an effort to make the base and its facilities more accessible to all personnel, residents and visitors.

Starting with a construction project at Amber Hall, engineers are installing several automatic doors and a chair lift at the east front entryway. At the push of a button, these mechanisms will operate to allow individuals of all capabilities to access the facility without assistance. The construction project is being funded using wing operating funds and without higher assistance.

Male and female bathrooms at the same location will also be upgraded to include revised stall layouts and wheel chair accessible vanities. These modifications are part of a push to bring base infrastructure into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Engineers face challenges since most of the base was built in the 1950s and predates the landmark legislation. The object of this new effort is to revamp base facilities and allow everyone the same opportunities to use Eielson's facilities unhindered.
