Parking in Military Family Housing Published Sept. 8, 2010 By Master Sgt. John Reiland 354th Security Forces Squadron EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- The 354th Security Forces Squadron and the Military Family Housing Office have noticed a significant increase in complaints of parking violations recently, and want to take an opportunity to ensure Eielson residents are aware of the parking requirements for Military Family Housing. All of the Eielson parking regulations are detailed in 354th Fighter Wing Instruction 31-201, Eielson AFB Motor Vehicle Code and in 354 Fighter Wing Pamphlet 32-2 Base Family Housing Brochure. The purpose of this article is to increase the awareness and prevent some of the more common parking mistakes on Eielson. No person shall stop, stand, or park a vehicle within 15 feet of a fire hydrant or within 25 feet of an intersection. Additionally, no person shall parallel park a vehicle on the side of the street facing oncoming traffic or pull through angle parking spots in a parking lot as to face against traffic flow. Additionally, curbside parking in Moose Lake Estates and French Creek Village is authorized only on the same side of the street as the sidewalks and mailboxes. We have also noticed an increase in incorrect recreational vehicle parking in housing. RVs include motor homes, pull behind campers, pick-up campers, and boat, ATV, utility, and snow machine trailers. The detailed rules for RV parking are outlined in the above mentioned FW instructions, but some of the significant points are included in this article. Housing residents are not authorized to park RVs in the housing area on a permanent basis. Occupants may however, have their RVs at their residence 48-hours prior to a trip to load and 24-hours after a trip to unload. RVs cannot be used for sleeping or cooking while parked in base housing areas. While loading and unloading prior to and after a trip, residents must park RVs in driveways if they have one and must avoid blocking sidewalk connectivity or protrusion into the street. Where sidewalks exist, the end of the driveway is an extension of the sidewalk; sufficient room must be available to permit a pedestrian or cyclist to pass without entering the street. For residents who do not have driveways, RVs may be safely parked in parking spots or along the street in accordance with vehicle parking rules during the loading and unloading periods. RVs may not be parked on seeded areas at anytime.
