Icemen reach DUI-free milestone Published April 21, 2010 By Capt. Frank Hartnett 354th Fighter Wing Public Affairs EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- Airmen assigned to Eielson Air Force Base have another reason to be proud of their Iceman Team. On Monday, the wing reached 100 consecutive days without a DUI violation. The most visible reminder of this accomplishment is a DUI-board posted at the only road exiting the installation. "This is more than just reaching triple-digits," said Col Jim Post, commander, 354th Fighter Wing. "This is about Airmen doing the right thing and refusing to put others at risk due to reckless decisions." Last year, 64 people died in Alaska as a result of alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents. The milestone is impressive given the busy operations tempo at the wing. Eielson continues to deploy Airmen overseas, conduct RED FLAG-Alaska exercises and is scheduled to perform an Operational Readiness Inspection in late May. It would be easy to assume that stress at work could lead to poor decisions while off-duty. "This is what happens when people take responsibility for their own actions," said SSgt. Ashley Newton, Airmen Against Drunk Driving. "We aren't saying you can't have a good time, but make a plan in advance and stick to it. If that plan fails call a cab or your fellow Airmen at AADD." The record comes on the heels of a recent push from state lawmakers passing stricter punishments for DUI violators. Jail time, fines and ignition inter-lock devices are now mandatory for offenders. "The message is clear from commanders and Alaskan authorities," said Lt Col Robert May, Staff Judge Advocate, 354th Fighter Wing. "Drunk driving is not tolerated and offenders will face harsh penalties. People need to realize the damage they can inflict on others or themselves." "I hope that Team Eielson continues to look out for one another and make responsible choices," said Colonel Post. "As dependable wingmen we'll continue to celebrate 100-day anniversaries over and over again."
