What a way to relax, just you and nature. Hiking is an extremely enjoyable activity that allows us the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and is an excellent form of exercise. But for most of us, hiking usually puts us out of our element and into one that may be somewhat foreign, so we need to be prepared both physical and mentally.

Before you set out to enjoy the Alaska wild, ask yourself these questions:

· Do I have proper clothing, equipment, food and water?
· Am I proficient in outdoor skills?
· Am I familiar with the terrain and weather conditions?
· Am I physically fit for the challenges ahead?
· Do I know the limitations of my group?

Knowing the answers to these questions will ensure that you are able to plan for a successful and pleasant hike.  Along with this preparation, there are a few simple tips that will make your next trip outdoors more enjoyable and safe.

- Know your limits. Hiking is far more demanding than walking the same distance on level ground.

- Do not hike alone, and never separate from your group. All trail objectives should be attainable by all members of a group.

- Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return. Plan your trip with group members' condition and experience in mind, and don't change plans or routes without notice.

- Check the weather forecast before starting, and prepare for the worst likely conditions. Plan alternate routes in case of bad weather, illness or injury, or slower than expected travel time.

- Keep a first-aid kit on hand, and ensure that it is tailored to the terrain that you will encounter.

These tips, along with some common safety practices and general knowledge, will help to make your next outdoor excursion one that will be remembered for the good times it fostered, instead of the disaster that could have been.  Be prepared, and enjoy the beautiful Alaskan wilderness this summer!
