Eielson thanks 2008's volunteers Published June 2, 2009 By compiled staff reports 354th Force Support Squadron EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- To help celebrate National Volunteer Week, the Airman and Family Readiness Center here held a Volunteer Appreciation Celebration at the base Chapel May 15 to say "Thanks" to Eielson's active duty, civilian, and dependent volunteers for 2008. According to the Volunteer Resource Coordinator, Dick Hageman, the base had another banner year in 2008. Eielson recorded 857 volunteers, donating an amazing 14,100 hours of service on Eielson and in the local communities. The savings provided by these volunteers totaled $275,082. "Additionally, we also know a lot of hours go unreported," stated Mr. Hageman, "but we highly encourage members to report their hours. The base tracks these hours for awards--monthly and yearly, decorations, and to have a documented source for training, job resumes, etc." Brig. Gen. Mark W. Graper, 354th Fighter Wing commander, received the symbolic check at the event and provided the following comments: "Eielson's volunteers provide a key service to the community, and their contributions go above and beyond the monetary benefits. Without our volunteer force, several programs, events, and activities would cease to take place and we are all extremely thankful for their contributions, especially during these difficult times." Mr. Hageman stated 2009 is actually ahead of 2008 in volunteer hours and recently three Eielson volunteers were recognized for achieving their Gold-Level Volunteer Award status, and were coined by Chief Master Sgt. Al Hannon the 354th Fighter Wing command chief. Kerry Lewis and Maria Stewart work at the Airman's Attic and Sheila Giannelli works at the Thrift Store and with the Enlisted Spouse's Club. For more information on volunteer opportunities or to send in your hours, please contact the AFRC at 377-2178. Participants may win a monthly award and earn Bronze-75 hours, Silver-150 hour, or Gold-250 hours, level awards throughout the year.
