Col. Phillip Hoover, 354th Operations Group commander

Time in Service: 23 years

Reason for joining:
My father was in the Air Force. I joined because it's comfortable--like my extended family, there is a sense of belonging. I also wanted to be a part of something bigger.

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?
I'm pretty happy being a commander and in the Air Force, I can't imagine a more rewarding career.

What has been the biggest accomplishment of your career?
Having the opportunity to command for the second time, especially at the squadron level because I get to interact with my people and lead them toward a common goal.

What's the biggest challenge you've ever faced in the Air Force?
Balancing family and personal issues with job requirements

Who has had the biggest impact on your life and why?
My dad, he taught me work ethic and responsibility. Also, one of my former commanders was very influential--he taught me adversity and to rally everyone around the mission.

What is your work philosophy?
Everyone's got a job, a role to fill, and no one person is more important. Everyone should do what they are required to do the best they can. Don't be afraid to accept responsibility.

What are your goals as commander of OG?
-Continue to establish RED FLAG-Alaska as a premier combat training exercise
-Develop every Airman in OG to the maximum, both professionally and personally
-Make sure every Airman that deploys is ready and able to contribute to the combat mission

Are there any key messages you'd like to convey to your unit?
Know your job, be the keepers of the standards, and be accountable. Be positive and optimistic.

When you're not being a commander, what do you like to do with your free time?
I like to spend time with my family and I enjoy outdoor activities, like skiing. I also like to watch college football.

What do you think about Alaska so far?
Well I've been up here before and I'm happy to be back. The people are very friendly and I'm looking forward to getting outdoors.

Anything else you'd like to add?
Thanks for the warm welcome; it's been a great few weeks.
