"We have accepted risk in infrastructure for many years in this command and in the Air Force. However, we will not accept risk in health and safety of our people. It is our responsibility to keep ourselves, our families and our co-workers safe from unnecessary risk," Gen. Howie Chandler, Pacific Air Forces commander,... Kunsan Fire Outbrief--Feb. 18 2009

Within the past four months, PACAF experienced two major fires to its facilities located at Kunsan Air Base and Yokota Air Base. To combat this from recurring, COMPACAF has mandated that all PACAF installations host a Fire Prevention Week.

Eielson Fire Prevention Week takes place April 6 - 10. The scheduled events are:

Monday April 6:
All facility managers, unit safety and fire safety representatives must attend a mandatory fire prevention briefing beginning 9 a.m. at the base theater. The fire department staff will lead the briefing and instruct on how to properly inspect facilities for potential fire hazards (overloaded surge protectors, frayed wires, inoperative fire detectors, etc).

Facility managers and unit safety representatives will be given a checklist and must conduct a 100 percent inspection of all facilities within their areas by close of business April 10.

Tuesday April 7:
All facility managers, unit safety and fire safety representatives must accomplish the fire safety checklist and conduct squadron internal training. The training must include, but is not limited to, Fire Extinguisher training, Block Training and Fire Evacuation Drills.

Wednesday April 8:
Mass briefings at the base theater begin at 8 a.m. and  1 p.m. The briefings include fire prevention techniques in the workplace, as well as the home. Representatives from the wing safety office and fire department will host the briefings, which will last approximately 50 minutes each.

A Town Hall style meeting will also be held that evening at 7 p.m. at the base theater. All base personnel are invited to attend.

Thursday April 9:
The fire department along with wing safety will set up a booth in the Base Exchange lobby. The booth will contain fire prevention literature as well as an opportunity for children to come and meet Sparky the Fire Dog.

Friday April 10:
All facility managers, unit safety and fire safety representatives must turn in their fire prevention checklist with all identified discrepancies to wing safety.
