Air Force spouses get career training relief

Air Force spouses are now eligible for no-charge career training when their Airmen spouses enroll at a nationally-accredited online school using Tuition Assistance.

The program at Allied Schools comes in the wake of recent efforts to help military spouses, including the Military Spouse Career Advancement Initiative, a government pilot program that provides tuition grants to military spouses at 18 military bases across the country.

Air Force spouses can now choose from an approved list of courses in real estate, the medical field and business at Allied Schools - many of which are 100 percent online. Allied offers training to be, for example, a medical transcriptionist or real estate broker, which are both highly mobile professions well-suited to the Air Force lifestyle.

Distance education allows Air Force spouses to train from home while still maintaining their daily commitments to family and friends. Air Force spouses do not have to worry about in-state/out-of-state tuition rates if they must move to a duty-station in another state - online training removes the barrier of residency status.

The school hopes that no-charge vocational training for Air Force spouses will build on recent efforts by both private and governmental institutions to help combat the career and educational challenges that face all military spouses, including those men and women married to Airmen.

A 2004 Rand Corp Study noted that two-thirds of military spouses "felt that being a military spouse had negatively affected their work opportunities." It is hoped that education grants, tuition assistance, no-charge training and other educational initiatives will help Air Force spouses achieve their school and career goals.
