Scholarship money for Eielson spouses Published Oct. 19, 2007 By Robert Fay Allied Schools, marketing department LAGUNA HILLS, Calif. -- Anyone who has spent much time at Eielson Air Force Base over the last six years understands that the Global War on Terror has impacted Air Force spouses in many ways. Among them is the burden of caring for children alone while their husband or wife is deployed. This important responsibility often prevents Air Force spouses from pursuing educational and career opportunities. Air Force spouses at Eielson AFB should know that there is both available scholarship money and online career training schools that allow them to study while taking care of children. Online courses also mean that if the Air Force transfers their family to another base, their studies can continue uninterrupted. Locally, the Eielson Air Force Base Officer Spouses Club offers thousands of dollars in scholarships to local area Air Force dependants - for more information check out their website at www.geocities.com/eielsonosc/. On a national level, the Air Force Aid Society offers educational grant money to Air Force spouses on a need-based basis. For the 2008 to 2009 academic year, spouses must submit a preliminary application no later March 7, 2008. For more information check out their website at www.afas.org/index.cfm. Once Air Force spouses have funding in place, they can train online with schools accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council. Many schools even offer a no cost laptop computer for Air Force spouses who enroll in select professional programs. Air Force spouses should know, despite the strain of long deployments, that if they have their mind set on training for a career, they are resources to make their dreams a reality. For more information on additional scholarship opportunities and online career training Air Force Spouses should also visit the Military Spouse Resource Center, a DOD site that can be found at www.milspouse.org.
