Alaska Red Cross provides preparedness tips

EIELSON AFB, Alaska --  September is preparedness month and the goal of the Red Cross is to help families through the process of "being prepared. " Preparation doesn't have to be over whelming, scary, take a lot of time or even cost a lot of money and you can prepare for a disaster by taking three simple actions;

Build a kit: Having a kit empowers a family to not only help them but also to be prepared to help a friend, neighbor or family member when an emergency occurs.
The Red Cross recommends that families have enough water, perishable food, medications and first aid supplies for each family member for three days. Here in Alaska we recommend seven to ten days of supplies.
Your kit should also include a flashlight and radio with extra batteries. Remember to check your kit every six months and replace any expired items.

Make a plan: When making your emergency plan include and practice an evacuation and communication plan. Every member of your family should know how to reach family members and where to meet if you can't get home. Your family should choose an out of state relative or friend for an emergency contact.

Be informed: Disasters can happen any time and anywhere and are different according to what region of the country your in. Here in Interior Alaska we face the threat of earthquakes, floods, wildfires, home fires, and winter storms, so prepare for those types of emergency's that occur here at home.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking it will never happen to you. Emergencies happen, but you can feel more in control by preparing you and your family in advance.
