Base-wide survey to decide public transit for base Published April 24, 2007 By Staff Sgt. Gloria Wilson 354th Fighter Wing Public Affairs EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- Getting from point A to point B is just a key stroke away. Icemen team members have until Monday to complete a survey that can make public transportation from Eielson to North Pole and Fairbanks a reality. The Fairbanks North Star Borough Transportation Department operates the Metropolitan Area Commuter System and with enough interest their buses could service the base. Days and times of service are contingent upon the survey results, so personnel are encouraged to get their surveys in. If the service is approved pick-up points would be set-up throughout Eielson and isn't just for new Airmen. The service could benefit family members, civilian employees, married military members, etc.; it can be used by anyone who needs to get in or out of Eielson. "We want to hear from the wide range of potential commuters on base, from the Airman in the dorms wanting to go to dinner and a movie in Fairbanks, to the Eielson civilian employee who lives off base and wants another option to get to work," said Mr. David Leone, Fairbanks North Star Borough public transportation coordinator. Mr. Leone also said they are aware that peoples' needs and wants can change literally with the season as some people prefer not to drive in the winter months, and some might travel more in the summer. The majority of the surveys received so far have been in favor of the service: "This service is greatly needed, especially for spouses who do not drive and need transportation downtown for appointments and such." "Definitely a great idea for teens and single Airmen living in the dorms on base, I know some people who are very scared of driving during the winter and they would be very happy to see this." "It is my opinion that if there was a bus system that ran at night, it would greatly reduce the number of DUIs in the North Star Borough involving Airmen and soldiers who live in North Pole and on Eielson AFB. It would also be a great advantage to people who do not own vehicles or do not like driving on days when the road conditions are bad. It would also increase opportunities for one car families." "With the cost of gas, it would be more practical for me to ride the bus. It would be nice for someone else to do the driving." Although some surveys have been received, feedback from as many Eielson personnel as possible is crucial. Please remember to turn your survey in to your first sergeant by Monday to weigh in on this important issue.
