This April the Department of Defense will take a concerted stand against sexual assault as it observes Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

This annual event provides us with the opportunity to increase knowledge and promote prevention of this crime through special events and public education.

This year's theme for SAAM is "Stand Up Against Sexual Assault...Make a Difference," which encompasses an attitude toward prevention of this violent crime, reminding us that each of us - leaders, peers and subordinates - can make differences through our actions. Lack of action exacerbates the crime. DoD policies address sexual assault prevention, seeking to establish a climate of confidence in which:

- Education and training create an environment in which sexual assault and the attitudes that
promote it are not tolerated;

- Victims of sexual assault receive the care and support that they need; and,

- Offenders are held accountable for their actions. Take an active stand in learning more about
sexual assault and its prevention by participating in local SAAM events during the month of
April. Your efforts could have a long-term effect on one of your fellow service members.
This year, the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator's office will be coordinating "The Clothesline Project."

The Clothesline Project is a visual display of T-shirts using simple artwork, illustrations, and/or words. These shirts can be designed by any military personnel, their spouse, or DoD civilian assigned to Eielson. They will serve to tell a story of a life that has been impacted by sexual violence; be it your own, a family member, or a friend.

Any new or used T-shirt can be used. Simply decorate the T-shirt in a way to express your emotions regarding sexual violence, or decorate to make a statement against it. Once finished, bring your shirt by the SARC's office, Room 301 or 304, Bldg. 2631 Wabash Ave, Airmen and Family Readiness Center.

The SARC office will ensure your T-shirt is displayed anonymously during the month of April and will be returned to you once the Project has ended. Additionally, the SARC office has a few T-shirts and decorating paints on-hand should you wish to use them.
The T-shirts will serve as an educational tool for those who view "The Clothesline."
Furthermore, it allows those who are still suffering in silence to understand they are not alone.

The Clothesline Project will run during the month of April and will be displayed in the hallway nearest the Commissary. Three winners will be selected among those participating. Active duty personnel are eligible to receive a one- or two-day pass from the 354th Fighter Wing commander, depending upon where they place.

All members regardless of rank or stature will receive a canvas bag containing miscellaneous items provided by the SARC office should they place in the top three.

Additionally, although the T-shirt will hang anonymously it is important to know that the top three winners will be formerly recognized by the 354th FW commander. Should anyone choosing to participate place in the top three, but desires to remain anonymous and not be formerly recognized, your privacy will be respected; however understand that it will be impossible to provide the one- or two-day pass.

Also, understand that anyone can participate; it doesn't mean you're a victim. It only serves to tell others that you are an avid supporter against sexual violence.

If you have any questions, please contact the SARC office at 377-0027 or 7208.
Speaking up is not a crime, but rape is.
