The Eielson Optometry Clinic is now offering its newest line of authorized eyeglass frame styles, all of which are available to active-duty personnel.

Airmen are allowed to order one frame of their choice annually in addition to the standard-issue brown plastic military glasses. This greater choice in eyeglass frames is intended to improve use of the military-supplied spectacles.

"In addition to the standard military frame, personnel are offered six alternative frame styles in various colors," said Master Sgt. Carmen Cate, 354th Medical Operations Squadron Optometry Clinic NCO in charge. "The frame of choice glasses are available in single vision or bifocal clear lenses."

"If a patient's prescription is more than one year old, an eye exam is needed before new glasses can be ordered. Patients must call the central appointments line at 377-1847 to schedule a routine optometry appointment," Sergeant Cate said. "Patients who have been seen by optometry within the last year and received new glasses must wait a full year before ordering the new frame of choice glasses."

Personnel who lose or damage their frame of choice won't be eligible for a replacement until one year from the initial order date. Requests for replacement glasses prior to one year will be filled using appropriate standard issue frames. Eligibility is tracked in the medical record and in a computer database.

"We are able to make adjustments and repairs to glasses as needed in shop," Sergeant Cate said. "To have repairs made, Airmen can stop by our office located in the clinic."

The frame of choice glasses are not authorized for use by aircrew members during "operational" duty status. One frame of choice may be ordered, but all aircrew requiring a vision prescription must continue to maintain the full complement of aircrew spectacles.
