Because of recent changes to Basic Allowance for Housing, incoming residents procuring housing on base from Corvias Military Living after April 1 will not be provided renter's insurance by the company.

The new change will have little effect on residents who are currently living on base before this date, with the exception of residents who signed a lease between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2015.

"Renter's insurance has long been provided as a specific component of the military member's BAH, yet the new BAH program has eliminated this component and going forward, military members will be responsible for purchasing their own renter's insurance to insure their own belongings," said Josh Crawford Corvias Military Living business director. "However, Corvias will continue to provide current residents' full renter's insurance, including personal property and liability coverage, until the time that a move occurs due to change in rank, familial status or duty station."

Residents who are the exception of the policy will be provided with the same insurance until their 12- month lease term expires.

Crawford said residents are encouraged to carry personal renter's insurance, but will not be required to obtain it.

The change in BAH comes after the Department of Defense eliminated all funding for renter's insurance and was not a decision by Corvias Military Living.

"While the initial news and change may initially concern some residents, Corvias has laid out a plan that is both fair and takes great care of our service members, despite the changes" said Col. Larry Rice, 354th Mission Support Group commander. "With the new change in policy residents are not required to obtain renter's insurance, but are highly encouraged to keep a policy to protect personal property in the event of an incident."
