Icemen 5/6 to host Special Duty Fair Published Oct. 22, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Lauren-Taylor Levin 354th Fighter Wing Public Affairs EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- Members of the Icemen 5/6 club will host a Special Duty FairĀ 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Oct. 24 in the Yukon Club Ballroom. The event allows Airmen the opportunity to learn about available special duties, ask questions and speak with Eielson members who have served in those positions. Many Eielson NCOs have previously served in special duty assignments and are looking forward to sharing their experiences. "Hopefully telling Airmen about my experience as a military training instructor will help them go into the assignment more informed than I was," said Tech. Sgt. Crystal St. Denis, 354th Medical Operations Squadron NCO in charge of dental operations element. "When you get the job, you don't get all the intricate details to being a military training instructor." In the past, any qualified Airman who met eligibility criteria defined in the special duty catalog could apply for a special duty opportunity. However in July, the Air Force announced selection for 10 special duty fields that is now a nominative rather than volunteer-based process. Master Sgt. Holly Roschel, 354th Force Support Squadron wing career assistance advisor, will discuss the new process in place for special duty assignment selection. "If members are interested in one of these special duties, they need to let their leadership chains know so that they can possibly be considered," said Roschel. With the new process in place, the event is designed to give Airmen details on the process they will go through if nominated for a special duty. "I definitely recommend people who are interested in or have ever considered filling a special duty position to attend," said Staff Sgt. Kimberly Vasquez, 354th Force Support Squadron Airman Leadership School instructor and event coordinator. The special duty assignments represented at the fair include military training instructor, recruiter, career assistance advisor, military training leaders, USAF Thunderbirds, first sergeants, dorm management, missile alert facility manager, professional military education instructor, technical training instructor, command chief executive, and the Airmen and Family Readiness Center NCO.
