The Eielson fire and emergency services have a program in place to inspect car seats.

Car seats must be installed a certain way into a vehicle and also have an expiration date. Fire and emergency services will explain the importance of the proper installation and ensure the car seat is safe.

During the inspection, the car seat is checked for proper installation and expiration date. A recall list is then checked to ensure the seat is not on the list. Participants will also receive an explanation on how their child should be properly secured in the car seat along with tips on how to keep children safe while traveling.

“A lot of people don’t know there is a lot more than throwing a seat in a car and strapping your child in it,” said Jeff Akin, the 354th Civil Engineer Squadron emergency communications center supervisor. “The seat has a specific way it is supposed to ride in a car.”

Reading both the car seat manual as well as the car’s manual is encouraged and will provide important information on the accurate installation of a car seat.

Currently there is only one certified individual at Eielson, so an appointment is required to schedule an inspection. For more information or to make an appointment, contact Mr. Akin at 377-4156.
