EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- The 354th Medical Group hosted a Ladies Night Out event April 29 at the Yukon Club, 318 women attended to discuss health topics with 17 different health professional vendors.
The event was held to promote health and wellness and was presented like a health fair geared toward women.
“We wanted women to be able to talk with physicians and be comfortable doing so,” said Capt. Abigail Rose, a 354th MDG mental health provider. “We wanted to hold a fun event heading into summer where women could get pampered and were able to ask questions and get connected to resources.”
Medical professionals were available for consultations and questions and the clinic’s appointment line system was present to schedule needed exams. There were free blood pressure screenings, the Breast Cancer Detection Center was available to schedule mammograms, Women Infants and Children had a booth, and a dietician was available to answer dietary questions.
“Mental health was present talking about sleep hygiene,” said Rose. “We gave direction on proper sleep habits and the risks of seasonal depression; a small portion of seasonal depression can occur in the summer.”
Physicians, nurses, a licensed clinical social worker and others were all available for direct consult.
“We know women’s health month is in October, but we had the time and resources to plan this event for the community, so why wait?” Rose said.
In conjunction with the health professionals available, women also received a little pick me up.
“Free pampering services were available,” said Ashley Bloechle, a 354th MDG new parent support nurse. “These included massages, hand therapy and manicures.”
Don’t fret guys, Rose said the MDG is going to do something like this geared toward men in the near future.
