The 354th Security Forces Squadron partnered with local law enforcement and U.S. Army counterparts to celebrate Police Week from May 15-21.

Police week is a time set aside to remember those who have fallen defending others and learn about how law enforcement and security forces members contribute to public safety on a daily basis.

“We want people to learn what we do on a daily basis, but also to see some of the more fun parts of our job,” said Master Sgt. Christopher Bounds, the 354th SFS logistics superintendent. “Most of all it’s a great time for members of this community to see the pride we take in our duties.”

National Police Week, a tradition going back 48 years, began when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week of May 15 as National Police Week.

In addition to equipment displays, a military working dog competition and the Fallen Heroes 5K Run/Ruck, one of the week’s main events was a shooting competition at the 354th SFS Combat Arms Training Range.

“Firearms are our most visible tool and something we never do our job without,” explained Staff Sgt. Stephanie Marshall, a 354th SFS CATM instructor. “This gave us the opportunity to sharpen our skills, create comradery through competition and have a lot of fun showcasing one of our most important capabilities.”

Marshall said danger is a reality when it comes to law enforcement, but highlighting how serious defenders and civilian police are about their mission is an effective method to demonstrate their commitment to the communities they swore to protect and serve.
