EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- Pacific Air Forces named one of Eielson’s Defenders, Tech. Sgt. Matthew R. Dobbins, the 354th Security Forces Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of operations, the 2019 PACAF NCO of the year.
“This award recognizes an individual, but I think it speaks more about the 354th SFS and Eielson Air Force Base,” said Dobbins. “Awards like this showcase the essence of a cooperative and team mindsent.”
In his role, Dobbins is an integral part of squadron operations which affects the entire installation as well.
“My job is to look out, care for, mentor and be the guide for all security forces operators,” said Dobbins. “That’s roughly between 119-130 personnel. I am the buffer between the squadron leadershipand the direct-line flight supervisor.”
Managing five flights may sound like a daunting task to some, but Dobbins fits the role perfectly.
“Anything that happens, anytime of day, it doesn’t matter, I’m the first one one notified in order to provide tactical and operational guidance,” he said.
Outside of his normal day-to-day duties, Dobbins is a part of the base’s COVID-19 Recovery team and is the Director of Community Growth and Planning for Iceman Spark, the 354th Fighter Wing’s innovation council.
“I haven’t met anybody as well rounded as him,” said Senior Master Sgt. Christopher A. Bounds, the 354th SFS Operations Superintendent. “When he does leave this position, it’s going to be big shoes for somebody to fill.”
Those shoes will need to be filled shortly because Dobbins' enlisted career is coming to a close and he’ll be heading to Maxwell AFB, Alabama, for Officer Training School later this year.
“I’ve now ended my enlisted career at almost the pinnacle that I can,” said Dobbins. “I’ve not only attained a commission this year, but I also attained this PACAF nomination.”
Dobbins will move on to compete at the Air Force level for 2019 NCO of the Year.
