President Bush visited Eielson Air Force Base Monday to address Airmen and the soldiers of Fort Wainwright.

His visit to Alaska, his first to Eielson, was the first stop in an eight-day tour to Asia. His travels will include meetings with foreign heads of state and also the opening ceremonies at the Olympic Games in China.

The President opened his remarks with some Alaskan humor.

"I've been to a lot of military bases around the world, but I don't think I've ever been to one where a moose can cause a traffic jam," said President Bush. "Or a base where a snowmobile can be considered a lawn ornament"

The President noted that the 354th Fighter Wing, also known as the Iceman Team, and the 168th Air Refueling Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard make many contributions to the country.

"I am very proud to be here with people who have volunteered in the face of danger," said the President. "You understand what I know, that it is best to defeat the enemy overseas so we do not have to face them here in the United States."

The visit to Eielson had been in the planning stages since early July, but only publicized since last week due to security concerns.

"Planning a visit of this importance can be daunting," said Lt. Col. Michael Fitzgerald, 354th fighter wing deputy mission support commander. "However, early on we assembled a team of experts from around the base which made the difference. These dedicated Airmen and DOD Civilians worked until midnight and through the weekend building the stage for the rally, coordinating Protocol plans, working with the local media and performing many other critical tasks that needed to be done."

The President shook hands with Airmen and Soldiers as he made his way back to Air Force One to depart for the rest of his Asian tour.
