Colorful changes in AF future with updated AFI

EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska --  It may look like an oversized bag of Skittles spilled in the Baker Field House next Fit Flag with changes to the Air Force Instruction Jan. 17, such as no color restrictions to athletic shoes.

Other notable changes include the wear of black socks and no reflective belt with the physical training uniform, the wear of certain qualifications badges with the Airman Battle Uniform and personal electronic devices no longer have to be black.

"I would be excited to wear a badge I've earned," said Staff Sgt. Chanson Johnson, 354th Security Forces Squadron combat arms instructor. "Airmen who have earned certain qualifications or do a certain job should be able to wear their badges with pride and be identified."

These changes, many of which were suggested by Airmen, were approved by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III with the goal of not financially burdening Airmen.

"With a good phone case being $50 to $100 I'm glad to be able to save money," said Senior Airman Victoria Jennings, 354th Comptrollers Squadron budget analyst. "Even buying a conservative pair of shoes can be difficult with the colorful styles these days. Being able to wear any color is a welcome option."

In addition to the new changes, Icemen stationed at Eielson are subject to their own local winter supplement approved by the wing commander through March 31.

Items in the supplement include the authorized wear of the sage green fleece indoors, black watch cap with blues uniforms, parkas, quilted thermals, face masks, arctic gear and footwear exceptions. The complete supplement can be viewed here.
