Thin ice, think twice
Tom Slater drills through the snow and ice to measure ice thickness April 19, 2011, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. Many factors affect the thickness of ice on lakes including wind, water flow, and snow making it difficult for the average person to judge how safe it is to venture on thinning ice. Mr. Slater is assigned to the 354th Civil Engineer Squadron as a natural resources planner. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Yash Rojas)
